Investing in cutting-edge technology for the laboratory

Cutting-edge mass spectrometry technology, in the form of the Maldi Biotyper® Sirius One, will revolutionize lab work by identifying bacteria within a record time of 15 to 30 minutes.  This speed will reduce the considerable 7- to 14-day delays needed to obtain certain results when samples must be sent outside the region. This improvement will enhance general antibacterial management and cancer treatment by making care both faster and more effective.

Innovating in outpatient clinics

The funds raised will also be used to acquire an EBUS bronchoscope. With this unit, procedures can be performed under endobronchial ultrasound, which is essential for diagnosing a range of pulmonary conditions such as inflammation, infections and cancer.

This acquisition is perfectly timed given that a new specialist, Dr. Dean Ferguson, is now in our region. Because the unit allows procedures to be performed on an outpatient basis, patients will no longer need to go outside the province but will instead be able to return home after spending a short time under observation. They will be more comfortable and enjoy improved access to local care.
