Eat Better, Spend Less: a resource for eating well at lower cost

Vitalité Health Network, Monday, March 11, 2024 – No one should have to choose between satisfying their hunger and eating nutritious food that promotes their health. To meet the growing challenges of rising food costs, Vitalité Health Network is launching a new guide entitled Eat Better, Spend Less.

Developed by the Network’s Public Health dietitians, this resource aims to help New Brunswickers make informed food decisions, while minimizing the negative effects of food insecurity.

Dietitians have identifed a growing concern about food insecurity among New Brunswick residents. “Around one in four New Brunswickers faces financial constraints that prevent them from buying essential foodstuffs,” explains Karine Doucet, Public Health dietitian.

“Rising costs are making it even more important to plan, store and cook economically. By sharing tips on how to manage food resources, we hope to support New Brunswickers in their quest for healthy, accessible food.” This resource is now available on Vitalité's website in the "A healthier diet" section under the "My health" tab.

Internet users will find practical advice and more than 19 easy recipes, featuring common and affordable ingredients. Photos accompany each recipe for easy understanding, with suggestions on using non-perishable foods and reusing leftovers to reduce food waste.

A guide specifically for immigrants entitled "Eat Well, Spend Less: tips for Newcomers" encourages the exploration of new flavors by sampling traditional recipes from different cultures.

“No one should have to choose between satisfying their hunger and eating nutritious food that promotes their health. In challenging economic times, it is imperative to rethink our approach to food. By combining our efforts, we can make every meal an act of kindness towards our health and our wallet,” concludes Karine Doucet.
