New Intensive Care Unit launched in Bathurst

Bathurst, January 31, 2014 – The Chaleur Regional Hospital in Bathurst celebrated today the official unveiling of the facility's new Intensive Care Unit.

“Our government is committed to rebuilding our health care system so that all services are sustainable, safe and of the highest quality. This includes strategic investments in our infrastructure,” said Health Minister Hugh Flemming. “The Intensive Care Unit at the Chaleur Regional Hospital was in need of an upgrade to meet current standards. Starting next week, the region’s most seriously ill patients will be cared for in a state-of-the-art facility with new equipment.”

Ryan Riordon, MLA for Nepisiguit, attended the event on behalf of the minister of Health.

The new unit has space for ten intensive care patients as well as five step-down patients. The project, which involves 15,900 square feet of space, represents a total investment of $13.4 million.

“This strategic infrastructure project confirms our government’s strong commitment to provide New Brunswickers with access to quality health care services,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams. “The new Intensive Care Unit will be more spacious for both patients and staff. It will be equipped with cutting-edge technology and will meet modern health care standards. These improvements represent a significant investment for the Chaleur Regional Hospital.” Claude Landry, MLA for Tracadie-Sheila, attended the event on behalf of the minister of Transportation and Infrastructure.

For his part, Stéphane Legacy, Chief Operating Officer of the Acadie-Bathurst Zone, expressed satisfaction at seeing the project completed. “The facilities are ultramodern, with more spacious patient rooms and dedicated observation stations. This unit is an important addition to critical care delivery for the region’s patients,” he stated.

The Chaleur Regional Hospital Foundation has also announced an investment of $353,194 toward the acquisition of vital sign monitors for the new Intensive Care Unit. “I wish to mention that the Foundation remains interested in discussing various partnerships to improve the care and services offered to our population. The Chaleur Regional Hospital plays a crucial role, which our community confirms year after year by contributing to the success of our funding campaigns,” explained Jean-Guy Robichaud, Board Chair of the Chaleur Regional Hospital Foundation.

The new Intensive Care Unit will welcome its first patients on Thursday, February 6.
