ORL surgeries now performed at Edmundston Regional Hospital

Edmundston, Monday, December 18, 2023 – Vitalité Health Network is expanding access to some otorhinolaryngology surgeries in Northwest Zone.

This specialty, which involves medical and surgical treatment of illnesses affecting the ears, nose and sinuses, throat, and neck, will be added to the procedures already being performed at the Edmundston Regional Hospital.

Dr. Benjamin Hoyt, an experienced otorhinolaryngologist, has been performing a range of surgical procedures there since November.  Dr. Hoyt is based in the Fredericton area but also saw patients in Grand Falls for approximately 15 years.

“We are pleased to expand the services available to our patients, who will no longer have to travel outside the region,” explained Chantal Pelletier, Corporate Director of Surgical Services. I wish to thank Dr. Hoyt for his involvement and to underline the collaboration we have received from Horizon Health Network in this regard.

The addition of this specialty was made possible by a Surgical Suite optimization project launched in March 2023 designed to maximize the effectiveness of unit’s resource utilization.

These efforts produced significant results, with a third operating room now open most of the year and lower surgical waiting times and cancellation rates. These efficiencies made it possible to increase the number of surgeries performed every year and to free up operating room time for new specialties.

Patients with otorhinolaryngology concerns can get a referral from their primary care provider, an emergency department, a walk-in clinic or other specialists.
