The Diabetes Clinic at the Shediac Regional Medical Centre serves the entire adult population presenting with prediabetes, gestational diabetes and Type 1 and 2 diabetes.
The Diabetes Clinic team includes a dietitian and a registered nurse who are both certified diabetes educators. In collaboration with the physician, the educators help patients to:
- Acquire and maintain healthy lifestyle habits;
- Understand their illness and effectively control their sugar levels;
- Become more independent;
- Take responsibility for and control their diabetes;
- Adjust their insulin and learn to manage it themselves.
Teaching is free and provided to diabetics individually or in a group (patients may be accompanied by a loved one if they wish). People don’t need to be referred by a physician to avail themselves of clinic services. They may be monitored until their diabetes is stable if they wish.
