Very dangerous substances may have been added to certain drugs in the Moncton area
Public Health at Vitalité Health Network has been informed that very powerful and dangerous substances may have been added to certain drugs in the Moncton area. There has been a high number of overdoses and poisoning cases linked to this situation.
Drugs in the region may contain medetomidine,a strong sedative commonly used by veterinarians.
Here’s what you need to know about this substance:
- Often mixed with fentanyl
- Can cause deep and prolonged sedation
- Can make overdoses more difficult to reverse
⚠️ Naloxone kits (a medication used to treat opioid overdoses) will not reverse all effects of an overdose involving medetomidine. However, naloxone should always be given in cases of suspected overdose.
💡Safety tips:
✔ Do not use alone. Use with someone you trust or call 1-888-688-NORS
✔ Start with a small amount and go slowly
✔ Carry naloxone with you
✔ Avoid mixing substances
✔ Use overdose prevention services (OPS) at the ENSEMBLE Overdose Prevention Site
✔ Have your substances tested when possible (services available at ENSEMBLE)
📞 In case of emergency:
If a person is unresponsive, call 911.
📍 Naloxone kits may be available through community partners. Contact ENSEMBLE or Public Health for more information.
