Improved Access to Pediatric Neurology in Edmundston: A Step Forward in Bringing Specialized Care Closer to Families

Vitalité Health Network is pleased to announce the addition of pediatric neurology consultation services at the Edmundston Regional Hospital. Provided by pediatric neurologist Dr. Michel Sylvain, this new service enhances access to specialized care for children in the region.
Until recently, children with neurological conditions had to travel to Moncton or Quebec to see a neurology specialist. Thanks to this new clinic, they can now receive specialized assessments and undergo certain neurological tests directly in Edmundston, significantly reducing travel time for families.
The service supports children living with various neurological conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, and muscles, such as epilepsy, migraines, developmental delays, Tourette syndrome, autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy and muscular diseases.
Consultations will be available one day every two months in Edmundston, with the possibility of increasing frequency based on demand. “This is a significant improvement in accessibility for families who previously had to come see me in Moncton,” explained Dr. Sylvain, who has been practicing at the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre since February 2024.
“This helps avoid long trips for already vulnerable children and allows them to receive specialized care in their own region.”
The Edmundston Regional Hospital is now equipped with a new device to perform electroencephalograms (EEGs), a key test in diagnosing several neurological disorders, including epilepsy and certain developmental anomalies.
With this new service, the Vitalité Health Network continues its mission to provide care and services tailored to the needs of the communities it serves.
