Medical Genetics Clinic
To make an appointment
Patients must be referred by a physician.
The clinic, which is part of the Provincial Medical Genetics Program, provides physicians in New Brunswick and neighbouring provinces with support services for diagnosis, treatment, and patient management.
Services offered by the clinic include genetic screening to assess the risk of hereditary diseases, family history assessments to evaluate the risk of specific conditions (e.g. cancer, cardiovascular/neurological/renal disease), and genetic counselling.
The objective is to provide physicians with as much information as possible regarding the genetic component of their patients’ health conditions, in order to support them in diagnosis, treatment, and patient management.
Who can receive these services
To receive services, a person must be referred to the clinic by a physician licensed to practise medicine in Canada, specifically in the province of New Brunswick and in neighboring provinces (Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia).
In general, referrals to the Medical Genetics Clinic are made by physicians seeking further information about the potential genetic component of their patients’ health conditions.
Anyone who believes they may require a genetics consultation should discuss this with their physician, who will determine whether a referral to the Medical Genetics Clinic is appropriate.
Please fax your request to 506-869-7245, addressed to the Medical Genetics Clinic.
Please include the following with your request:
- Completed request for consultation form, filled out by or for the attending physician
- Clear reason for the request (e.g. family history, dysmorphia, developmental delay, hereditary cancer)
- Patient identification, including last name, first name, date of birth, health insurance number, address, and telephone number — the patient identification label is usually sufficient
- Relevant clinical information, such as medical reports, progress notes, imaging results (e.g. ultrasound), and laboratory results
- Family tree (if available) and details about affected family members
The Medical Genetics Clinic does not handle cases involving prenatal genetics. Please refer such cases to the nearest centre offering specialized prenatal services, such as centres in Quebec (Centre hospitalier universitaire de Québec – Université Laval, Québec, QC) or Nova Scotia (Maritime Medical Genetics Service, Halifax, Nova Scotia).
