The Pediatrics Department provides high quality care tailored to the unique needs of each child and adolescent. Through an interdisciplinary approach, we support their overall development while working closely with their family and community.

What is the Pediatrics Unit?
The Pediatrics Unit is a collaborative environment where teams work together to deliver comprehensive, family centred care.
Within Vitalité Health Network, each facility works in synergy to ensure that children receive the right services at the right time, while taking into account the unique needs of every child and their family.
Parents play a vital role and are encouraged to take an active part in care and decision-making alongside health care professionals, helping to create a transparent and supportive care experience.
What services are offered at the various centres and hospitals?
Vitalité Health Network's pediatric care units provide specialized secondary care. If a child’s condition requires more complex care, they may be transferred to a tertiary centre for a higher level of care.
In all cases, the children benefit from the support of a multidisciplinary team dedicated to providing care tailored to each family’s needs.

Pediatric development team
From birth, some preschool aged children may experience developmental delays or be considered at risk. An interdisciplinary team provides comprehensive, individualized follow up to support these children and their families. Occupational therapists, physiotherapists, dietitians, social workers, speech language pathologists, psychologists, and pediatricians work together to offer coordinated care.
Pediatric oncology nurse navigators
Do you know a child or an adolescent with cancer?
Pediatric oncology nurse navigators can provide valuable support and guidance.
When a child or an adolescent is diagnosed with cancer, family life is suddenly disrupted, as daily routines come to revolve around treatment decisions and frequent travel to specialized treatment centres in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, or Quebec.
Nurse navigators are there to support the family every step of the way. They can provide information on financial resources, travel, treatments, and transitions between different phases of care, based on the specific needs of each situation.
Who are pediatric oncology nurse navigators?
Pediatric oncology nurse navigators are nurses specialized in pediatric oncology, with extensive training and experience working with children and adolescents living with cancer.
They work closely with the child’s health care team, both within New Brunswick and outside the province, to guide families throughout the oncology care journey.
Their role is to help parents understand the challenges they may face, answer their questions and support them through difficult times.
These services are offered as soon as the diagnosis is announced.
Families can ask to be referred to a nurse navigator or communicate directly with them at any point in the process (diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, palliative care, etc.).
Nurse navigators can :
- provide ongoing, personalized support
- facilitate access to hospital and community services
- ensure families have all the necessary information about treatment options
- assist in identifying financial resources to help cover treatment-related travel expenses
- provide educational material (books, videos, online resources) and support families in understanding cancer
- work with the care team to prepare for the child's return to the community
- take part in meetings with parents, daycare providers, or schools, visit classrooms, and offer staff education on pediatric cancer
