First trimester: 0 to 3 months
What happens in your body
Your periods stop, your breasts may become tender and fuller, and you will start to feel more tired. Nausea, especially in the morning, may also occur.
Baby’s development
During the first trimester, your baby, now an embryo, begins to develop its first organs. For example, the heart starts beating around 6 weeks into pregnancy, and thumb-sucking may begin before the end of the trimester!
Vaccination recommendations
For more information on vaccination, consult your doctor or health care provider.
Prenatal classes: Getting off to a good start in the first trimester
Expecting a baby raises many questions, especially when it's your first pregnancy. Prenatal classes are a great way to learn, feel more confident and prepare to experience this wonderful adventure with peace of mind. They cover essential topics such as pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, newborn care and adjusting to life as a parent. In addition to giving you the tools you need, these classes give you the opportunity to interact with other future parents and to ask questions.
How to register ?
Prenatal classes are offered free of charge to all pregnant patients in our Network. We recommend that you register as soon as possible to reserve your spot and follow the schedule at your own pace. During your first appointment at the obstetrics clinic, the staff will discuss this topic with you and will be able to refer you. However, if you want to get a head start:
- By phone: Contact the Family Resource Centre in your area (contacts at the following link): Centres | Association des centres de ressources familiales du Nouveau-Brunswick
- Online: Register directly at the following link: Programmes | Association des centres de ressources familiales du Nouveau-Brunswick
Think early about how to feed your baby
From the first trimester, it is important to start thinking about how you want to feed your baby. Ideally, this decision should be based on reliable information and discussions with a health care professional.
If you choose to breastfeed, know that good preparation increases your chances of having a positive and fulfilling experience. To support you in this process, we encourage you to consult our breastfeeding information booklet, an essential resource that covers the basics, benefits and the first stages of breastfeeding.
Perinatal grief
Experiencing a miscarriage early in pregnancy can be a deeply upsetting experience. Every parent reacts differently, with their own emotions, questions and concerns.
To support you during this difficult time, we encourage you to consult our “Expriencing a Miscarriage” guide, which has been designed to help you understand what you're going through and find support, at your own pace.
